Paul Barsch & Tilman Hornig, 'Immer Müde und Scheiss Wetter in New York', 2018, custom made umbrellas

'Immer Müde und Scheiss Wetter in New York' (always tired and shitty weather in New York) was realized in 2018 in the shadow of working on a new New Scenario project during a joint residency in NYC. During the half year stay in New York we had to share a room (because of the fucking expensive rents) and we started to secretly take pictures of each other while sleeping or being tired. New York can be exhausting; too often too late to bed, too early out, driving too far through half the city, looking for decent food, collecting materials, looking for film spots, meeting people, parties, exhibitions, etc... We were constantly outside on our bikes and exposed to the often shitty weather in NYC. If we wanted to cycle home from the studio early at 5am for example, it often rained cats and dogs. We didn't experience that NYC never sleeps; rolled up sidewalks at night for the most part.
Apart from this rather personal backstory, umbrellas are very beautiful sculptural mass objects, which are omnipresent like sleep, but little noticed for their function and form.
You only realize that you need it the moment you miss it.
